Wellbeing Thought for Wednesday 17th February 2021

Wednesday 17 Feb

Eating Well

Food and drink are like fuel to our bodies. If we put the wrong type in (as when we fill up a diesel car with petrol) it will have adverse effects. Drinking enough water and eating healthily means greater energy levels, better sleep and enhanced emotional peace. After Elijah sleeps, God gives him a good meal (Read 1 Kings 19.5-8)! God had a plan for Elijah, but first he had to be strengthened physically. We pray “Give us today our daily bread.” God wants us to be physically well. Our part is to ensure we put the right fuel into our bodies.

  • Drink enough water.
  • Don’t skip breakfast.
  • Avoid big meals late at night.
  • Make sure you eat a balanced diet, with enough fruit and veg.
  • Don’t overeat.

Is there one change in the list above that you can make straight away?

Sleep matters

“Sleep allows our bodies to repair themselves and our brains to consolidate our memories and process information. Poor sleep is linked to physical problems such as a weakened immune system and mental health problems such as anxiety and depression.” (Mental Health Foundation)

Psalm 4.8 says “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.”

Nine tips for healthy sleep (Matthew Walker):

  1. Stick to a sleep schedule.
  2. Exercise, but not too late in the day.
  3. Avoid caffeine and nicotine.
  4. Avoid alcohol before bed.
  5. Avoid large meals and beverages late at night.
  6. Don’t take naps after 3pm.
  7. Relax before bed.
  8. Aim for a dark, cool, gadget-free bedroom.
  9. Don’t lie in bed awake – do something non-screen related such as reading, praying or journaling.

There is a link between our inner peace and the ability to truly rest. Ponder Psalm 4.8 and talk with God about it.

Physical Replenishment

We need to take care of our bodies because it is the only place we have to live! In 1 Kings 19 we read how the prophet Elijah was spiritually, emotionally and physically exhausted. God began to restore Elijah by letting him sleep. Then he provided food and water for him. Where is your physical ‘dial’? Invite God to help you take the right steps.

WEEK TWO: PHYSICAL WELLBEING

Sunday 14 Feb

Your body matters

Our most basic needs are physiological (i.e. related to the body): food, water, air, rest. Managing energy, not time, is the key to vitality and effectiveness in all areas of our lives. God has given us a body and in Jesus Christ chose to become like us – a physical human being! Your body matters! Thank God for your body and ask him to help you as you explore greater physical wellbeing.

Wellbeing Thought of the Day Saturday 13th February 2021

Saturday 13 Feb

A growth (not fixed) mindset

“The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” (attributed to Albert Einstein)

Approach this wellbeing journey with a mindset of proactivity and growth, even if you feel like you’re currently stuck. Take some time to mark where you are at on your life dashboard in the six areas – full, empty, half-full? Remember: with God’s help and your determination you can and will change.

Wellbeing Thought of the Day Friday 12th February 2021

Friday 12 Feb

An overcoming (not overwhelmed) mindset

  • Dispute the negative thinking (write down the false thoughts and dispute them with the truth (especially from the Bible).
  • Get back control. See exercise for Day 3. Choose not to take responsibility for the things you cannot control but act on the things you can control.
  • Connect with others. Reach out to one trusted person today.

Wellbeing Thought of the Day Thursday 11th February 2021

Thursday 11 Feb

A faith (not fear) mindset

Faith is closely linked with trust. We need to put our faith in God, who alone is completely trustworthy and reliable. Feed your faith (spend regular time in God’s word) and starve your fears (2 Tim 1.7, James 4.7-8). Write down your primary fears, invite God to show you the reasons for your greatest fear. Then command the fear to go in Jesus’ name.

Wellbeing Thought for the Day Wednesday 10th February 2021

Wednesday 10 Feb

Depleted or replenished?

There is good tired (after a good workout or a long and productive day) and bad tired. Chronic fatigue is dangerous! Take a few moments to pray and thank God that he understands our humanity. As you go through your day, check your fatigue levels. Invite God to refresh you and to teach you rhythms of replenishment.

Tuesday 9 Feb

Security and belonging

People who have a sense of security and belonging are more likely to weather the storms of life. “The key to understanding security is learning to relate to the eternal, not the temporal.” (Dr Neil Anderson) Make two lists: things you can control and things you can’t control. Make sure the goals you set yourself are from the list of things you can control. Commit all other things to God and his care.
